In the book “How to Think Like Leonardo da Vinci” Michael Gelb provides several exercises and tools. The first is the powerful 100 Questions Exercise.
Grab your journal or a notebook and find some place quiet. Write down the first 100 questions that come into your head. Treat this like stream of consciousness writing. Don’t worry about punctuation, spelling, or even re-writing the same question. Just write any that seems important to you. Do this all in one sitting. The first few will be easy, but then you will have to dig deeper. What you come up with may surprise you.
After you have finished, go back over them and look for themes and repeats. Pick out your top 10 and rank them in order. This can be a tremendous insight into how you think, what’s important to you, and what you should focus on right now.
You can repeat the exercise at different times in your life. I noticed for me, 90% of the questions were focused on the business I am building. That may be good, or it may mean I’m too focused and need to add in some breaks. There were also a couple of questions that were surprising.
After this exercise, the author gives a “top 10” compilation from others for you to consider. And several more. Like pick something out, study it and ask 10 questions about it. This book is a most enjoyable and informative read. I haven’t read that far yet, but already highly recommend it.
What are some of your top questions? Or topics if the questions are too personal.
